2-Hour TV-Movie Greenlit For 2009 As Stargate Franchise Lives On In Features

Space drama Stargate Atlantis will conclude its run on Sci Fi Channel after the current, fifth season ends next January -- but the network has greenlit a two-hour Atlantis movie to run after that and says the show will live on as a network franchise.

After airing on Sci Fi sometime next year, the untitled Atlantis movie will be sold as a home-video title by producer MGM, Sci Fi told Multichannel News on Wednesday.

MGM this year released two financially successful straight-to-DVD movies made after progenitor series Stargate SG-1 ended a 10-year run of first-run cable episodes on Sci Fi. MGM and the show producers are scheduled to make more in DVDs in future. A movie franchise is also envisioned for Stargate Atlantis.

Meanwhile, we get a two-hour movie instead of 20 hours. I can't say I'm all that thrilled that Mallozzi and partner will pen the movie.

Well, I won't be watching anything more on Sci-fi. I can't believe they keep scrapping great shows (Stargate, Farscape and now Stargate Atlantis all shows that were doing well) to put on cheap crap (flush Gordon, Pain Killer Jane anyone?) that nobody wants to watch. They have been going down hill for a long time now. What can I expect from the bottom of the barrel network of NBC? And they can stuff Stargate Universe, didn’t even like anyone in the cast on that thing!

Did you hear anything on casting on SGU? I haven't heard squat on it.

I saw something and I can't remember where, but they showed the cast of the show and I didn't like any of them. Don't think they were people that are known. Put it in a search engine, you might stumble accross it.

Same here, I am canceling the network when the last episode of SGA and BSG air. I am not interesting in Sanctuary and SGU. I watched Eureka, GH and GHI but I will not pitch a fit if I miss those shows, Stargate was a different matter.

SciFi has a notorious record for shows that did not last long, the ones you mentioned and others that I saw only once and then were canceled. I was annoyed when the Dresden Files were canceled as well.

Gods, I really, really hate Skiffy.

I'm with you on that! I've hated them since the demise of Farscape for of all things a dirty cartoon! Tripping the Rift was it?

Oh my gods, that is right. That cartoon show was mental.

I still have not forgiven them for canceling Farscape, then SG1, Dresden Files, The 4400 and now SGA. So pissed off right now.

They had started another new show that lasted 2 episodes if that. I don't think they care about the audience they already have, I just read with the new SGU that they hope to get a younger audience. Well, what the hell are we, chopped liver. We have been here for 15 years with both SG-1 and SGA, and now they want to get rid of us for a younger audience! To hell with them, it would serve them right if both that show and Sanctuary tank. Might teach them a lesson!
