2-Hour TV-Movie Greenlit For 2009 As Stargate Franchise Lives On In Features

Space drama Stargate Atlantis will conclude its run on Sci Fi Channel after the current, fifth season ends next January -- but the network has greenlit a two-hour Atlantis movie to run after that and says the show will live on as a network franchise.

After airing on Sci Fi sometime next year, the untitled Atlantis movie will be sold as a home-video title by producer MGM, Sci Fi told Multichannel News on Wednesday.

MGM this year released two financially successful straight-to-DVD movies made after progenitor series Stargate SG-1 ended a 10-year run of first-run cable episodes on Sci Fi. MGM and the show producers are scheduled to make more in DVDs in future. A movie franchise is also envisioned for Stargate Atlantis.

Meanwhile, we get a two-hour movie instead of 20 hours. I can't say I'm all that thrilled that Mallozzi and partner will pen the movie.

Its probably just as well. They've been making a lot of weird character choices lately and the writing really hasn't been as consistant or as good as it was the first 3 seasons. I mean a Rodney/Ronan/Keller love triangle? Come on folks!

*sigh* Sci Fi doesn't tend to get a long shelf life regardless of ratings. Its pricey to produce and no matter how good the ratings, they still can't compare to American Idol which is all TV execs really understand.

I feel terribly sad. I feel terrible for the cast & crew, even though I know they are talented and will find work. Still makes me sad. I hope JF gets another TV series. I wonder if he'd even consider politics?

Ah, I think I get it. MGM must be bleeding money somehow (those crappy TV movies, perhaps?), and they aren't getting enough by simply airing the show and the season box sets. A movie, however, cuts production costs, and they'll earn more.

Why can't they just take a hiatus like Doctor Who will? They'll have the movie or two to last us a year, and then they can save up some cash for the next season.

Sci-Fi always has sucked, though. And that's a sci-fi show for you-- DW and SG1 aside, how often have they actually lasted for more than five years?

I've heard there's to be a supposed new spin-off of some kind. :/ I wonder how they'll wing that, if at all.

gah ! i only discovered SGA six months ago and now they are taking it away from me!!? noooo noooo nooooo!
im a noob so apoligies for my etiquette -im so down at the mo.

Everytime i start to love something it gets pulled.

i just dont feel like movie/dvd format will allow the characters to breathe and develop y'know? I mean, can you REALLY see each of our beloved charcters getting enough quality screen time?
oh and a side note there is petition here-maybe it will snowball if enoguh people sign it ??

SciFi has killed every good show it has. It can't kill WHO because they don't make it. Thank goodness. But Invisible Man, etc. all killed with stupid decisions. Eureka will get the axe too, I'm sure, in a year or two.

Pretty sure the actors had a six year contract, which is standard, so Joe F, David, Rachel all should have anohter year. Jason, I'm not sure, since he came in late.
