Hmm, yanked this off Mallozzi's blog tonight (12/15/2008) ... "As some of you may have heard, the wonderfully talented Robert Carlyle has signed on to join the crew of the Destiny in the upcoming Stargate: Universe series. The award-winning actor - Begbie from Trainspotting to some, Hamish Macbeth to others - will be playing the role of Dr. David Rush, the ship’s brilliant Machiavellian scientist. I see a lot of myself in Rush and, next to yours truly of course, I can’t imagine anyone better for the part. Contrary to initial reports, the Rush character is not the leader of the unplanned expedition. That honor falls to Colonel Everett Young. For now. But things could have a way of changing on board a ship manned by a disparate group with very different agendas…

hmm, hmmm, uh....

Somehow a character which is a lot of Joe Mallozzi DOES NOT inspire me to watch..

Polls are fun. Especially when I'm bored and my default setting seems to be stuck on sarcasm... =P

Honestly, how hard is it to come up with NEW character personalities? They make it seem like SG can ONLY be SG with those same 4-6 personalities. People DO get bored of watching the SAME thing over and over, especially when it's suppose to be a NEW series.

LOL! Col Everett Young, known in a previous life as Col Marshall Sumner.

Also, I'm getting an odd feeling Dr Rush may turn out to be a Baltar type of character. They are going for the BSG angle after all.

It inspires me to vomit.

I find it interesting how so many Brits are excited about the casting of Carlyle, while most American viewers are saying they've never heard of him or only vaguely know of some of his works once they look him up at IMDB.

He's not a "name actor" in the American market. That's not anything against those in other countries, but it is a fact that North America is the primary market as far as Sci Fi is concerned.

They'll be ponying up quite a bit of dough for this, so I can't see them really caring if foreign viewers recognize the "name actor" though MGM might have bigger vision about that aspect since they're aware of the worldwide fanbase and can market there.

Most fanfic writers try to avoid writing them once they understand what they are.

Apparently the pro writer response is to not only have a Mary Sue, but make her secondary character a focus of the final season, just because they luvs her so much.

Serious. Even if I'd wanted to watch (which I didn't), I wouldn't just knowing that fact. That man gets on my last nerve. (I deleted his blog from my feed because it just made me angry every single day.)

Ok, nothing I have read so far is inspiring me to even care who they are casting and especially not Robert whats-his-name.
Never heard of him and don't care to see where he takes the next incarnation of Stargate.

Given Mallozzi's rabid personality failings, I'd hate to see what he was like if he really was Machiavellian. ;)

hmm. perhaps. and then there will be obvious hints at a relationship that the fans will grow to love and then one of them will die/be sent to the pegasus galaxy/become taken over by replicators or goauld/fall in love with a nerdy scientist.

did i mention killing off the doctor?
and replacing her with someone else?

At this point, it's dangerously close to the point of gravitational collapse and forming a black hole (previously known as his writing career).

And this is *exactly* what's been wrong with the writing this season. Can someone please tell Mallozzi and Gero that the very best writing comes when you are not basing on your characters on some bizarro fantasyland vision of yourself?

From: [identity profile] libra-traveller.livejournal.com
You know this makes me think. Some writers say how they think of their characters as friends, that they get so close to them. So is Mallozzi only wanting to be friends with himself? That narcistic?

From: [identity profile] lysambre.livejournal.com
Wow, Mallozzi is pulling a Gero. After Gero's masturbating fantasy onscreen, we're now going to have Mallozzi's.
And the man dare compare himself to an actor such as Carlyle ? Some people's ego knows no bound.

If I had ever thought of watching SGU (which I did not), this news would definitely have killed any interest, forever.

I think now I really should stay away from spoilers. It will be along wait for the pilot though.
