Wow, Joe Mallozzi posted in his blog before midnight!

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2009/01/26/january-26-2009-city-of-saints-and-madmen-by-jeff-vandermeer/

"So what, many of you have been asking, IS happening with the SG-1 and SGA movies? Well, at last report, Carl was about 20 pages away from a first pass of the script which will then find it’s way onto Brad’s laptop where he will do his pass. The Atlantis movie is still an outline but Paul and I will be starting work on the script in the coming weeks and hope to have it completed by April. An official production start date for either movie has yet to be announced. More detailed discussions on both movies will be taking place in the coming weeks and, hopefully, I’ll have more definitive news for you then regarding everything from actor participation to a preliminary schedule."

So, an answer, but not an answer, as even he doesn't know. So, maybe around Sweeps Weeks we'll know something? Who knows.

If he doesn't 'know' I would guess that means he does. He just doesn't want to say. Smart man since every time TPTB open their mouths they dig themselves a little deeper into that hole in the ground .

If it truly is a financing issue then I'd be surprised to see the SG1 movie anytime in the near future either. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if MGM has everything and everyone on a very short leash right now. Aren't they in the process of merging with Sony?

Thanks for all the info.

Studios are odd ducks. They'll finance stuff with 'name' stars that turn out to be utter crap (not hard to name a few of those turkeys) yet with something that will pull in a decent, but not humongous, amount of money, they waffle. the thing is that MGM really can't count on SGU to keep the franchise alive. THere is a percentage of fans who only want to watch SG1, or SGA, and will go 'meh' to SGU for whatever reason.

I think they're banking on RDA's "star power" to make money on the SG-1 movie, so it will probably get made. He tends to pull in some viewers that might not normally watch anything Stargate.

Agreed. There's always less fans for each successive offering for a franchise unless it's a reinvent like BSG or STnG but even those were years after the originals. Makes me wonder where TPTB expect to get the numbers to make SGU worthwhile doing in the first place.
