My family has a cabin in Point Roberts, Washington which is about 45 minutes from where I live in New Westminster BC, Canada.  Since Point Roberts is in the US, they go all out for the 4th of July.  This year they are having a parade and I just found out that the Grand Marshall will be David Hewlett (he plays Dr. Rodney MaKay on Stargate: Atlantis).  Since I'm a huge fan of the show and Rodney in particular so I'm pretty psyched.

Science-fiction fans will want to catch this year's parade, with its theme "An Outer Space Fantasy." The Vancouver-based fan club for the Sci-Fi Channel TV show "Stargate Atlantis" will march in the parade, which starts at noon.

David Hewlett, who played an astrophysicist on the series, will serve as grand marshal.

Following the parade, Hewlett will sign autographs at Lighthouse Marine Park where the festivities will continue with a Family Funfest until 6 p.m. There will be games with prizes for all ages, refreshments and musical entertainment.

First prize in a raffle, which will benefit the Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce scholarship fund, is a Hawaiian vacation.

Point Roberts 4th of July Celebration and Parade

Annual 4th of July Parade and Family Funfest! This parade has been going on each year since the early 1900s--this year the theme is "An Outer Space Fantasy". Grand Marshall is TV star David Hewlett of STARGATE ATLANTIS. Games, refreshments, beer garden, travel raffle, children's entertainment, musical performances. Our American neighbours in Point Roberts will celebrate Independence Day on Saturday, July 4.

The Tsawwassen Rotary Club will head south and host a pancake breakfast from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in front of TJ's Restaurant on Tyee Drive.

 

The Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce will once again hold a parade followed by activities at the Point Roberts Marina.

 

The procession, which has an outer space theme this year, is set to get rolling from the old Breakers parking lot at the end of Gulf Road at noon.

 

The parade will travel east on Gulf Road and south on Tyee Drive. It will end at the parking lot at the foot of Tyee Drive where it meets Marine Drive.

 

Actor David Hewlett, who played a character on Stargate Atlantis, will be the grand marshal for the parade.

Have a blast – July 4^th

Point Roberts Goes to Outer Space. With one foot in Canada and the other in the United States, the tiny peninsular town of Point Roberts follows their own set of rules. Case in point: This year, their 4th of July hoedown comes complete with an outer space/fantasy theme. What this means is that their noontime parade will likely transport you to a different world. (After all, the Grand Marshall will be none other than actor David Hewlett from Stargate Atlantis.) Follow that up with a Family Funfest and a party at Lighthouse Park from 12-6pm and you’re good to go.

“An Outer Space Fantasy” Set as the Parade and Family Funfest Theme

David Hewlett Named Grand Marshall

 

Once again, the Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau will host the annual 4Th of July celebration. Beginning at noon, the parade, an event on the Point since the early 1900’s, will start at the west end of Gulf Road and progress to the Marina. Immediately following the parade, the fun begins at Lighthouse Marine Park, on Marine Drive at the Southwest corner of Point Roberts. This year, we are pleased to have David Hewlett as Grand Marshall of the parade. David is the star of Stargate Atlantis, the long running SciFi Channel series. David plays Dr. Rodney McKay, the brilliant and lovably sarcastic astrophysicist on the show. David has also guest-starred on The Closer, ER, Without a Trace and The District, among others.

 

His film credits include Splice, Clutch, Where the Heart Is, as well as a number of cult favorites. He and wife Jane wrote, directed and produced A Dog’s Breakfast, which was distributed by MGM and 20^th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

 

David is currently writing and producing the Television series Starcrossed for NBC/Universal and the SciFi Channel, as well as a feature length pilot, Judas Run, for MGM. Both are projects in which he will also star.

 

Grand Marshall David Hewlett, star of Stargate Atlantis David will be signing autographs at Lighthouse Marine Park following the parade. His wife Jane and son Sebastian will be by his side during the parade.

 

FLOATS, MARCHERS, AND “OUT OF THIS WORLD” FUN

Join us in Point Roberts for our celebration of Independence Day, July 4. Festivities begin with the 4^th of July parade at noon and continue with fun-filled activities at Lighthouse Marine Park. Bring your favorite space cadets, come in full Martian garb or just wear a tinfoil hat!

TIME: Noon until 6:00 pm

 

PARADE: Festivities begin at noon when the parade leaves the west end of Gulf Road. (Parade participants check in at 11am and begin lining up.) The parade route goes east on Gulf and turns south on Tyee Drive. The parade ends at the Point Roberts Marina.

FAMILY FUNFEST

LOCATION: Lighthouse Marine Park on the boardwalk and beach, 811 Marine Drive

TIME: Immediately following the parade

 

ACTIVITIES (Schedule TBD):

Travel Raffle sales, drawing at 6pm (you don’t have to be present to win)

Children’s activities, including face painting, games and entertainment
