LOS ANGELES, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles judge Wednesday sentenced Dominic Bando to five years in prison for assaulting "Stargate Atlantis" actor Jason Momoa, officials said.

Momoa needed 140 stitches after Bando hit him in the face with a pint beer glass that shattered during an altercation at the Bird Cafe in Los Angeles last year.

The Los Angeles Times said Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Judith Champagne sentenced Bando to the five-year state prison term Wednesday and scheduled a restitution hearing for next month.

Bando pleaded no contest to the charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

Hmmm. Is it just me, or would he have got a lighter sentence if the victim hadn't been an actor? These sort of things happen every day.

Assault with a deadly weapon is the same as shooting or stabbing someone, hence the 5 years. We also don't know what his previous record is. It also doesn't mean he'll actually serve 5 years. Could serve less. However, you can run someone over in NYC but you'll end up in traffic court with a fine and points on license....

Only right given what he did to him
What a horrible thing........
Courts are so lenient anymore that it disgusts me
At least this time the judge handed down a sentence
worthwhile

Five years seems like a really harsh sentence. Is that standard? I would say that it's because Jason is an actor, but it's not like he's famous outside of sci fi circles, so...

Not that I'm complaining, but I do wonder if 5 years is the standard in CA. That seems like a very TX punishment.

Assault with a deadly weapon holds a high penalty and he got what he deserved! 140 stitches is a lot of damage, the most I ever had was 16 and I thought that was a lot. The guy should have gotten more than 5 years in my book!

Good, i think 5 years is fitting for the the crime. The injury inflicted was awful, but the potential was there for something much more serious.

Maybe he would have got less if he hadn't attacked an actor, but that doesn't mean he should get less, it means the courts should be this tough on everyone, regardless of who they smash a glass in the face of.

It's the potential and the intent. Could easily have taken out an eye, major blood vessel, fractured skull, etc. I'd like to know the guy's record, as that may have played a part in the higher sentence.

Precisely, you don't smash a glass in comeones face without intending to cause serious injury. He could easily have left him with a permanent disability and/or disfigurement. Heck if he'd got it just right, he could have killed him. *shudders at thought*

5 years suddenly doesn't seem long enough...

According to the site below, the guy could have gotten anywhere from 3 to 12 years for the assault charge.
