Great vid! I love seeing starlings like this on TV and hope one day to see it for myself in person (there are places in the UK they do this)!! But then, I love starlings on an individual basis too, and I know many bird people in the UK aren't that enthralled with them (they can be bullies). But I think they're funny, and when the sun hits their feathers, they're very pretty too. And baby starlings in the garden in spring? Hilarious!! Best free entertainment around!
I've heard of what too many starlings in one place can do to the trees (bird crap everywhere!) but hey, they've got the right to be here too... We have crows in our yard - most people don't like 'em - and they routinely chase this red tail hawk that thinks our backyard is a diner.
Oh yeah, I hadn't really thought about that many birds in one place - guess the trees etc turn white! Ugh!
We have a sparrowhawk that thinks our garden is a diner (they go for anything from a sparrow up to a magpie - though the larger birds are almost as big as the sparrowhawk itself!). I go from 'oh, nice looking bird', 'it's only nature' and 'it's a sign that we have a lot of birds about' to 'oh, my poor birdies' and 'go away, you cruel killing machine'!!
Though at the moment it seems to be taking the collared doves, and we do have far too many of them about (I counted eight of the them last week, all trying to get on out bird table - which isn't that big!). So maybe I can live with it, sort of. So long as it doesn't pluck the poor thing on my back lawn again (like a few weeks back) - not fun to clear up the feathers etc! And it better leave my resident female blackbird alone - MiLady still comes to the back door for food when it suits her and I'd sure miss her demanding ways!!
Um, yeah, can you tell I'm a bit fanatical about the birds that visit me?!! I'll shut up now!!
A lot of our birds and squirrels just don't seem to be around. As soon as Fall hit, poof, gone, dont' know where. I know there's a record amount of acorns in the woods, so perhaps squirrels are foraging there, and yeah, think that redtail hawk is discouraging visitors.
