The Oscars

I taped it, on the VCR, which I realized after speed-searching it today, that, well, the heads get dirty, so picture, etc. dropped out, but oddly enough, it didn't bother me. At least I still have a head cleaner, although I'm sure they're extinct.

Anyhoohow, I basically watched bits and pieces of the Oscars, as I had no real vested interest in any of the movies. I was glad to see  'Hurt Locker' get all its wins. I pretty much figured 'Avatar' would clear out the SPX awards. I really liked 'Avatar' and will buy it when it comes on DVD, but the overall plot was nothing too new. I mean, we've all sorta seen it before. Otherwise, the SPX on it were fantastic! I'd even have chosen 'District 9' over 'Avatar' to win as that was a pretty good film.

I heard all the bruhaha over Farrah Fawcett being left out of the memorium segment, but then again, all the TV actors (far too many of them) were listed in the Emmy's memorium segment. This was devoted to movie folk only, which is why lots of names may have seemed unfamiliar. And like they said, you can't fit them all in, unless you wanted James Taylor to keep singing the same song, over and over...

I was glad to see some color in the dresses. Am sick and tired of black outfits only. There were some hideous outfits out there. There was the one that looked like a nudibranch. Fine on a sea slug, but not a person. I did not like Sarah Jessica Parker's outfit at all, despite the raves from some critics. I hate to say it, but in one segment when she was on stage, I was thinking Bride of Frankenstein. Really, the backlighting and dress. Shudder. I shall have to find the ever-present best and worst dressed articles, which I'm sure are all over the internet. Ben Stiller in Avatar outfit may give me nightmares...

George Clooney had some wonderful facial expressions and that man still looks good with gray hair!  Um, um, some of the jokes worked, others didn't, the "oh look who's in the audience" ran overly long. I saw no need for a dance segment, but was thrilled to see "Up" win but all the others were fantastic too. I want to see those animated shorts. Hopefully IFC will show 'em (unless they already did)...

And after speedsearching all of the Oscars, that's about it. I mean, gone are the days of the actors turning up stoned to accept their awards, or Cher in incredibly outlandish outfits...

Sarah Jessica Parker's dress was awful! And J-Lo and Amanda Seyfried looked like they were wearing bubble wrap.

I think Anna Kendrick's dress was my favourite, closely followed by Demi Moore and Sandra Bullock.

And Miley Cyrus... holy hell. Is she TRYING to look 30? That dress was not age appropriate.

I don't know what the teenagers think when they dress for this kind of award (and in fact, I don't know why they were presenters except to pull in the young crowd). Sandra Bullock's dress was nice. can't recall Anna's or Demi's. Wonder if I saw them yet... Hee, yeah, bubble wrap does explain some of it.

Anna's was gorgeous. Demi's was a similar style.

OMG! Charlize Theron! Awful dress!!! Truly awful!!

Demi Moore:http://www.nowmagazine.co.uk/gallery/red-carpet/26538/1/0/pictures-of-oscars-2010-red-carpet-arrivals/1/

Anna Kendrick: http://twilightsource.com/2010/03/photo-anna-kendrick-arrives-at-the-2010-oscars/

Love, love, love them! Especially Anna's now that I look at them a second time. But Demi always seems to find a great dress, too.

I've not seen The Hurt Locker but it's on my list.

I was a little disappointed to hear a report on NPR from a soldier who said it was completely glamorized. I thought it was supposed to be a true to life attempt at showing us real war and instead he said the danger and the explosions were completely Hollywood. I'll have to wait till I see it of course, but that kinda kicks a movie out of best picture status for me.

Avatar had no business even getting nominated for that.

I read some articles on it, maybe even the NPR one, and to some extent, yeah, it's glamorized. Reality isn't that exciting. Don't know if the explosions were, but some bomb specialists said the lead character was too aggressive (or whatever). They're calm and collected, but that doesn't play well for entertainment. I've seen some IED explosions on news programs. Guess I'll have to rent HL and see how they compare.

Although I quite enjoyed Avatar, I think the simplistic plot didn't really garner it a nomination. Now the SPX, whoa, those were *great*!

Completely agree with what you said about Avatar. The tech, no doubt was absolutely stunning. It should have taken every award for those kinds of things.

But yeah that story was so lame and so overdone, it didn't deserve to be up for best picture.

I was tempted to sit and watch the Oscars live..but then remmebered that i had to actually get to work on a matter of Uber importance on monday:(... :/

I think Avatar deserves all the technical awards it can get.. (I think James Cameron pretty much said that himself) But for story depth and construction.. there are other films that are much more "there". Avatar will still be one of my fave-rave movies i think. but purely becaus eof the whole "art" of it all.. i mena you cannot get the same effect on a meer TV screen as going to see it on the cinema screen..

I am glad that Christoph Waltz got supporting actor.. having just watched Inglorious i have to say he was magnificent in it.. and i am so happy that Jeff bridges got leading role.. :)I am a bit annoyed about "up" though it had some moments but I find i watch Coraline more than "Up"... but then it is a pixar and we all know how much the Oscars adore Pixar..

over all though i am glad Hurt locker got some notice.. it is one of those movies which i think deserves attention. especially in a year where the general movie viewing has been a bit .. well passive. :)

I was torn between "Up" and "Coraline". Seen them both and they both have their merits...

I missed the first part of the show. Then I fell asleep when I changed the channel when the dancing started and missed the acceptance speech by Jeff Bridges. But www.oscar.com has all of the thank yous and even has them transcribed, so I got to see all the awards I missed.

Ah, I should check it out, except I'm too lazy. Just want to see pictures of bad designer dresses. ;)

We recorded the Oscars because they were shown from 9.30 until Midnight over here and I had to go to bed earlier than that. So we watched it the next night and if I was reviewing it then it would probably exactly the same as yours.
