Q: One more 'Stargate' question: McKay is a fan favorite. Why do you think fans connect with him so well?

A: I can't speak for the fans, but I can speak for me ... I think if I wasn't working on these shows I would be a fan of this stuff. I grew up watching 'Doctor Who' and buying all the books and the dolls and that kind of stuff. I love that stuff, so I feel like I'm paid to do what I would be paying to do! But for McKay, I always feel like there's a little bit of McKay in everybody. Everybody wants to be the guy who has the answers and who isn't afraid to admit that he's a genius, social niceties be damned! I mean I love science fiction because it takes me out of this world. And with McKay, he's the scientist who has spent his entire life reading about this stuff and now he's getting to live it. In a way that's what all of us want. We've done the reading, we've done the research, we've done the dreaming, and we want to be McKay -- we want to be the guy who saves the day because we know all this stuff. We want all this nerd-dom to pay off. And McKay is the resulting image, he's th
e iconic figure of the nerd who's done his homework and now he gets to go off and save the universe.

Thank you for posting this! I'm excited about the ep, though also a little worried about how McKay fits into the SGU world without, you know, not being McKay! But David seems to think it worked out alright, so I'll stick with excited for now!

Sad to say I fell asleep watching it (not enough McKay!) ;) but shall rewind tape and watch tonight. I was wondering... so this means Atlantis is STILL stuck on Earth? Cuz I don't see Rodney going back and forth...

I haven't seen it yet, I thought SGU was on a Friday in the US and so was waiting until Sat before tracking it down online. Clearly wrong, so off to track it down now (Sky One is only starting to show SGU this coming Monday, woefully behind the US).

EDIT: Seen it now - not the best ep of the season, if McKay wasn't in it I might have lost interest (first time this season that would have happened)! And yes, not enough of him - but at least it was him and not an OOC McKay!!

EDIT: 2 (sorry, just noted the last question) I'm wondering where Atlantis is as well. I mean, maybe Rodney would travel back and forth for a project of this importance, but Woolsey as well? It's possible, I guess, but surely there are other people who could take Woolsey's role?

Also, Telford offers Rodney a chance to go to Destiny (he doesn't seem keen to me!), and suggests that Rodney can have his pick of assignments - but does this mean Atlantis is on Earth, or that Telford just wants Rodney on the Destiny so badly he's appealing to his ego? *shrugs*

I think Joe M, way, way back (someone pointed me to it as I don't read his blog these days), said something about having to tweak the timeline for the movie (should that ever get made!) to take the SGU ep into account - but what that means I have no idea!

I hope they find some way to answer these questions!! Maybe they should take David's suggestion at a con some time ago and make a new spin off - Stargate: McKay!! *bg*

Of course, I read your post before I watch the episode. My fault ;) I miss Rodney, I miss Sheppard. Gah, I miss SGA!
