'Stargate SG-1' Star Joins 'Atlantis' Cast for Fourth Season

Claudia Black to Guest Star on 'The Dresden Files'

NEW YORK – February 20, 2007 – The Stargate legacy continues to burn bright on SCI FI. As the countdown to the final ten episodes of Stargate SG-1 commences, the Channel prepares for the launch of an all-new fourth season of Stargate Atlantis this fall. SG-1's Amanda Tapping will travel to the Pegasus galaxy to join the Atlantis cast and reprise her role as television's favorite astrophysicist, Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter.

Taking the torch from SG-1 as television's most thrilling adventure series, Atlantis, slated to begin production in Vancouver next month, promises to up the ante this season by introducing a powerful new race, welcoming new cast members and mourning the loss of some beloved friends.

For ten seasons, Tapping starred on Stargate SG-1 as the intelligent and beautiful Samantha Carter. Her combination of Gate expertise, in-depth scientific knowledge and military training made her a critical member of SG-1. She will need to draw upon all these resources as she assumes her new role on Atlantis. Tapping will appear in 14 of the season's 20 episodes.

Atlantis fans can also look forward to the return of Jewel Staite (Firefly, Serenity). She will appear in eight episodes, reprising her role as Dr. Keller, a physician who joins the Atlantis expedition. Staite previously appeared on the series as Ellia, the Wraith child who was transformed into a human in the season 2 episode, "Instinct."

Season 4 of Stargate Atlantis will be executive produced by Brad Wright, Robert C. Cooper, Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. Mallozzi and Mullie will share the reins as the series' showrunners.

In other casting news, Claudia Black (Stargate SG-1, Farscape) has recently completed filming a guest-starring role on SCI FI's new original series The Dresden Files. In the episode, entitled "The Other Dick," Black plays Liz Fontaine, an Erin Brockovich-style private eye with a checkered past. Fontaine will give Harry Dresden (Paul Blackthorne) a run for his money, igniting sparks and tensions as they try to investigate the same murder case. The episode will air on Sunday, March 25 @ 9pm.

The final ten episodes of Stargate SG-1 and season 3 of Stargate Atlantis will return on Friday, April 13, leading into the series debut of Painkiller Jane.

My comments at cut below....

On a snarky note, not a single mention of who IS returning. Just pushing NEW people, as if the regular cast members aren't worth tuning in for? No mention of Shep or McKay or....well, that would spoil things when they kill off some of the regular cast.

Not thrilled with this news, no, not at all. Not with Mallozzi at the helm. He's rewriting his old scripts already into SGA ("Irresponsible", for one) and has been wanting to put Carter on SGA. Too bad other characters get the boot to make room for her... (and yes, budget-wise, someone had to go).

Nice to see how much SciFi etc care for the damn show that they can't even get the details of Jewel's previous role in the show correct in the press release (Elia turned human? Really? Was that in the director's cut version?!).

More reason to sob over this press release though.. it confirms SGA will return for Season 4 not in July or August but in THE FALL! That's like *forever* away! *sobs bitterly*

Gah, my mind totally glossed over the glaring error of Ellia being turned into a 'human.' I sure don't know any superhuman strength blue plated humans. Did the PR person watch the show???

Meanwhile, Skiffy is shooting itself in the foot by delaying SGA until the Fall. It will get slaughtered by the networks.

I'm ready to give up on this show. I'm sick of hearing about the 'big name' SG1 stars. They're stars because they were ALLOWED to have their time, without having 'bigger' stars brought in to take the spotlight.

I don't know how any of the SGA cast members can be happy about this...

Maybe they should start polishing their resumes.... Skiffy is gonna kill the show with six month hiatuses as more and more fans will simply go 'screw it' and if it airs anywhere else in the world, fans will seek out 'alternate sources.' They should put it all out on DVD. I'd pay extra to get it all NOW.

Their logic astounds me. As someone who works in the industry, I've seen this sort of thing so many times over. It defies all logic. Break up a team that has chemistry? Stupid. Screen episodes in your major market after it's gone to air elsewhere? Again, stupid.

Do they really, really think people are morons, because that's how they're behaving. They're not taking into account the changes in technology that means if people want it after it's gone to air in Canada, they can get it, and they don't have to watch it when it goes to air in the US.

The sheer stupidity defies believe. It's just moronic at best.

They should notice that ABC cut LOST in half and it sure as heck did NOT help the ratings.

An article/interview regarding this topic should be out tonight or tomorrow. I'll post it when I get the permission.

Absolutely. How they can say that public opinion means nothing to them when it's public opinion that decides whether their show lives or dies is unbelievably arrogant!

Mourning the loss of some beloved friends can only be seen as confirming that Elizabeth is going. Otherwise it's only Carson, which would be "a friend" as opposed to "some friends".

Bastards. I won't watch the show without Weir. I just won't.

OMG I totally missed that. I really hope they don't kill off Weir, I didn't like her so much in the begining, but I can't imagine anyone else as the head of Atlantis :(

Okay, who is the next one that will get killed? I really have the feeling that they turn SGA to SG-1... but why should they do something like that? In Germany we still wait for season three but I'm not sure if I will be happy with season 4...

Elija turned to a human? Wait a second - she get killed by Ronon or did I missed something!?

Well, if you don't know who they killed off in season 3, then enjoy the bliss while you've got it...

As someone pointed out, Ellia turning human was in the 'director's cut' ;) - apparently the PR person who wrote that never watched the show.

I actually wrote the PR people and pointed out the error, just out of curiosity to see if they'd even care...

Granados, Maureen
Coordinator - SCI FI Publicity.

(and if I had enough guts I'd fire an email off to her. Or even call too)

She apparently needs to get a new job/career. Because I sure haven't seen ANY publicity for SGA (or SG-1 for that matter).

And the marketing campaign to promote "The Dresden Files" really worked sooo well.

Again everything eventually SciFi touches goes down the drain. Proving fact.

If there's been publicity (past the "and SGA returns too" comments with SG1 ads), then I haven't seen it. They advertised the wazhoo out of DRESDEN FILES on many online sites. Not sure about magazines though, except did see some 2 page spreads.

Reprising? as in she was Dr. Keller before? wasn't she the wraith kid? yes as they say she was, but she didn't get turned in to a human did she? have I missed something? I'm sure I haven't, get ur facts straight Sci-Fi people.

Not with Mallozzi at the helm. He's rewriting his old scripts already into SGA ("Irresponsible", for one) and has been wanting to put Carter on SGA.

AAH! Run away! Irresponsible was one of the worst written Eps. *cringe* and I can't be sure (don't watch SG-1) but I never liked Carter too much, I hope this doesn't turn in to Rodney chasing after her, because really, that is old news, and he has Katie now (despite the McShep in me I like the Canon Katie/Rodney) oh God I really hope it doesn't get counter productive, showing us how much he's changed since the begininng to only bring carter and have him drooling over her. But I can't help but think thats whats gonna happen (judjing from McKay's behaivour in Irresponsible *cringe again* )

I might be over thinking ths just a little but damnit I like the new Rodney, the obnoxious scientest who is cowerdly till it really counts, and then he's fearless. He's our Rodney.

"...and mourning the loss of some beloved friends."

There's a plural there for Season 4, not reflecting what happens in Season 3.

I think Radek will be the next to go. With Carter there, Rodney will bounce his lines off her, not Radek.

It's like Deep Space Nine all over again. DS9 never had a season to itself, it overlapped Next Gen and Voyager. We don't get one season of the Atlantis cast as it stands. No, we have to shake it up because the Atlantis fans aren't good enough. Obviously TPTB feel that SG1 fans won't come over for a look now that their show is gone. They need to drag the SG1 fans over with Carter and get some cross pollination with the Firefly fans.

I feel extremely insulted.

Have you guys seen Joe's blog? after he's prattled on about food he anwsers q's about anything. There were a lot of questions about this and he either gave sarcastic answers or just said it would be great and the ratings would decide. I got the impression he doesn't give a rats about anything other than SG1. which is all well and good for him, but not so much for me.

My concern is if i stop watching because I hate Carter. I could loose the show completly. im trying to find the best way to prove my distate without loosing the show I love. as theres bound to be a serge in ratings to begin with as people will likely watch just to see how big a car crash this is!

Joe Mallozzi is a jerk who cares nothing got the fans, I'm convinced of it....just "Well, I feel like doing this today!" Fanfic writers can get away with that. TPTB can't.

Well, that's absolutely final confirmation, that the "changes" were made to made "room" for Carter.
I hate to say it, but it actually makes me not too eager for s.4 to start. Yes, I'd be watching, but I expect a lot of moaning and bitching about Carter's presence in Atlantis (and I've done a lot of this already).

Fuck. As a REGULAR? Not RECURRING? Damn. I sure hope I'm wrong. Sucks so much that both Paul McGillion and it seems Torri Higginson definitely won't be regulars (maybe just recurring) within the show. I really, really wish Amanda Tapping wasn't going to be on. This just makes me so incredibly disappointed in one of my favourite shows. I really wish this were like Grey's Anatomy, in which the producers are willing to hire people that really haven't been in anything before, but that they are GOOD ACTORS, to play the really interesting roles. That way, the show would be really worth watching. John will no longer be head military, Rodney gets stupid and acts like an idiot, Elizabeth may or may not wake up...Fuck, really.

Alas, yes, Weir is down to recurring and that depends on negotiations I believe... :( As for Beckett, after what happened to the character, I think the only way we'll see him again is as a flashback or alternate universe appearance :(
