Saw a notice on someone's LiveJournal, then GW, and managed to catch it on DVD. Alas, I have no idea how to xfer it to YouTube, and have no screencap potential, except.... to point the el chealpo digital camera at the TV, so what comes up next are crappy quality but amusing shots (amazing how you can reduce our heroes into goofballs with a pause button). Enjoy!

My first thought was maybe it means Sam won't be officially a part of the military. Which would probably drive the hardcore shippers nuts if she's out of the military now. ;)

But I think it's simply because there's no USAF advisor to report to for Atlantis, ergo they're no longer going to bother to keep Sam in a regulation haircut.

Hadn't thought of that, but yes, makes sense as that's sure not a regulation haircut. I'm happy to see Shep's in the black uniform still :)

TPTB really chafed at the USAF restrictions, because they couldn't do what they wanted (i.e. S/J ship). Which is one reason why I think they went more and more "sci fi" and less "real USAF people and equipment in a sci fi environment" as time went on -- they didn't want to be dependant on the USAF allowing them to use their stuff in exchange for their approval on scripts.

Which is why Atlantis only plays lip service to some of the character beings USAF and doesn't have an advisor to answer to about the details.

Since the show is based in another galaxy, guess what the USAF says doesn't really apply...

Amanda Tapping said on the 200th thing that she wanted long hair didn't she? Maybe Atlantis is a way for them to let her get away with it :)

Still a little concerned about this will effect the show dynamic though....(Carter, not the hair :P)

:) I'm still partial to the short hair.

Does the Air Force have different rules than the Marines? Because Cadman had long hair. Or is the show just blowing off the rules again.

Cadman's a character on Atlantis, so the rules don't apply to her, as they don't to Sam now.

TPTB were very adamant about not wanting a USAF advisor for Atlantis, so they have no one to answer to about the way real USAF should look or act.

Oh, and I forgot to add... I think there are some rules about those who can wear longer hair, such as it has to remain in braids or a bun while on duty (in other words, where it can't blow into their face), but I'm not certain on that point.
