I think Joe actively seeking out-season work has people worried since he's never seemed to have any interest in doing other work while on the show before.
To be fair, 4 years is a long time doing the same thing, let alone 5 or the 6 he's contracted for. I've never made a secret of the fact that I think that if the show goes on past the contract terms (highly unlikely at the moment, but they might turn it around), I don't think he'll continue. And honestly, he has three kids and a wife in LA, and travelling home every weekend must be tiring and stressful.
Joe is the main reason I tune into SGA. If he left, I'd give it a fair chance, but unless they found someone good to fill that hole in the show, I'm afraid SGA would be on shaky ground from the off.
