Not that anybody hasn't guessed half of it due to NBC/Universal's press release on Amanda Tapping going over to Sanctuary. But anyway, will stick it under the cut to be safe.

In Joe Mallozzi's February 1st blog entry, he said:

As stated in the SciFi press release, Amanda will guest star on Atlantis’s fifth season - but the exact number of appearances by Colonel Carter will be wholly dependant on Amanda’s availability and the types of stories we have in the works. Still, Carter will be one of a number of familiar faces that will be popping up in the Pegasus Galaxy in season 5 - including a new commander. Remember way back, when I said we had considered a handful of possible candidates for the command position at the beginning of season 4? Well this person made that short list then, and we’re VERY excited about his/her/its(?) addition to our cast of regulars. As for who it is and what other little surprises we have in store…head on over to the SciFi site Monday morning and start refreshing.

I know for some fans, this is bad news. They may watch the show predominantly for her, but for me, it's good news. I never felt that the writers properly utilized Carter. She was a good character for the most part on SG1, yet when she came over to SGA, it was like, uh, huh? I'd honestly prefer a character/actor who can devote their time to the show, and not be off part of the season (or half, really, in this case) doing another project.

However, on the bad side for everyone... constant cast changes. I suppose as long as the key people (Sheppard, McKay, Ronon, Teyla) stay put, I'll be pretty happy, but the constant changing of cast, pretty much for new good reason (I mean, really, did blowing up Beckett really help the show? I think not).

I'm trying to think who might be the new commander....

Mitchell? Don't think so...
Daniel? Don't think so as it's not his forte and he'd go nuts
Landry - perhaps
Caldwell - one can hope

My brain fried thinking of possibilities for a new commander. I'm kind of hoping it goes back to being a civilian, to be honest.

The only pre-existing civilian I can think of who might be suitable for the position is Woolsey. You think of anyone else?

Oh, then they are all soooooooooo screwed if Woolsey is in command. ;)

From: [identity profile] nightspring.livejournal.com
Well, it could be very comical! They could meet up with Todd the wraith again, and Woolsey'll be all "Do I have to talk to him," and John'll be "Hey, you're the expedition commander," and Rodney'll be "Don't look at me."

From: [identity profile] balikpulang.livejournal.com
Heh, pardon me jumping in, but my bet's on Woolsey too.

I wonder if "Todd" or "Michael" will get confirmed as recurring - that would be cool too!

From: [identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com
I'd prefer that neither Michael nor Todd be recurring as that means, they won't go away. I'd rather they show up unexpectedly and cause many, many problems, otherwise, being too recurring sorta sucks the menace out of 'em ;)

I think everybody would go mad after a while, you can tell that the tension rises in the city when he's around.

I'd prefer civilian too, otherwise with the military in command, we get little if any conflict.

I really, really, really hope it is not Daniel.

Don't get me wrong I like the character and think that Micheal Shanks does a good job, but I am not sure I could deal with some of the more devoted Daniel fans. I mean some of the more...extreme Rodney fans are bad enough, but if they were on the show together... I think the internet could very well explode from the batshit....

Date: 2008-02-02 05:01 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com
Well, I haven't run across the extreme Rodney fans, but have run across rabid S/J shippers who came over to SGA (although the truly rabid fans are really a handful of vocal need-to-get-a-life types). I don't think Daniel would make a good commander only because he'd be kept out of the field and doesn't have command experience, and I think he would NOT want it (Daniel, that is).

As long as it's not Landry, I'm okay. It would be interesting to see Caldwell in command because he'd have to deal with Sheppard. I wouldn't mind seeing somebody new in charge, but they have to be creative and not dull at all! The leaders cannot be boring!

the new commander could be an actor who hasn't been on stargate before. Or it could be someone who had a recurring part and is now in a very different role.

I think JoeM has said that the new commander is a character that has already apppeared on Stargate.

i think he has written some great episodes in the past - but i was really REALLY *REALLY* starting to enjoy atlantis for the first time in AGES and then he pulls a stunt like this. honestly, I think AT could have been a major asset to the SGA team - only it seemed like half the time they were afraid to use her. Stupid stupid. GLARE GRUNT GROWL

btw. sorry wraithfodder - didn't mean to rant in you lj *hides*

From: [identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com
Quite honestly the rants here are tame compared to the ones at GW. I think TPTB didn't utilize Carter properly in SGA. I didn't want her 'taking over' but they could have done more with the limited screentime she had, but... well, I have no idea how the guys at Bridge think.

Date: 2008-02-03 01:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ellymelly.livejournal.com
yeah, i didn't want her to take over either, but i thought effectively ignoring her was a bad move. i realise that i am heavily biased by my shipping preferences, but i thought that sam could have been show her value (at least in one ep) where she could save everybody with her genius. as much as i love mckay, it's getting old with him being the only one to technobable his way out of galactic destruction. i thought season five of sg1 had it pinned when carter and mckay went head to head on scientific issues, and you never knew which one was truely right. they didn't even touch on that at all in sga.

Date: 2008-02-03 06:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com
Quite honestly Carter seemed more a warm body to slot in. WHile I didn't want her taking over Rodney's role (he and Radek handle that well enough), I didn't want her to sit around and do nothing or be wishy-washy. That's why I'd rather they get a civilian back in charge who isn't science, isn't military, so is a new role. oh hey, like Weir! Of course, we need some writers who can write her...

Date: 2008-02-02 07:26 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ellymelly.livejournal.com
hmm... Caldwell (it's a possibility) wouldn't mind him at all :D
Thor! *sighs with deep sadness*
Ba'al! okay, i'll be serious...
um... you don't think it could be Hammond? that would be beyond awesome.
Woolsey would be awesome for about five minutes - then he'd get us all KILLED. lol
Agent Barret is another possiblity.
That leaves us with ... daniel - but that would really begin to make sga feel like the show they transfer sg1 to. (which i don't mind as long as they own up to it) anyway, i doubt it'll be him.

you never know - it could be Narim lol (not sure what his sga name is...)

Oooh - Agent Barrett - now we're talking my fav minor character. Don't think so though - he doesn't have enough credibility (status). I bet on Woolsey because it would create so much controversy as every decision would be questioned.

Actually, since Weir left the commander doesn't really have a major role with Carter only being on 14 eps and only making a short appearance in some of those. So, we might not get too sick of Woolsey's attitude.

woolsey would be cool, but i really do think that he would kill us all! (unless of course, they give his character some development and he becomes a good leader. i would like to see that story) hmm... now i'm rooting for woolsey. lol

I'm rooting for Caldwell, he's pretty cool.
Woolsey would blow up Atlantis at the sight of a Wraith Dart :(
Agent Barret is needed on Earth and that would just be too weird if he joined Atlantis.
I love Daniel all and all, but he needs to stick with SG-1, that's sort of what should've happened with Sam.

caldwell would be good, except, i quite like him in his current role. i like the idea that he has a conflict of power with atlantis, and i think that adds a lot to the show.

Date: 2008-02-03 04:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] parislove27.livejournal.com
It would take away from the show

but then it would temporarily give it another conflict and then die away

I have to agree with you about Caldwell, he's good where he's at already. It would be awkward to have another commander of the Daedalus

I'm still mad about the constant power changes. If you go from Weir to Carter to somebody else it's going to get very moody in here. :P

thor is NOT dead. I don't care what they say. He abducted CArson as his love slave and chief kitchen helper! ;) *cough*

Narim's new character is weir's ex-boyfriend, i can't remember his name though, but the government wanted him to go to atlantis. was is steven? i'll have to look it up.

I'm guessing it's Caldwell. Wasn't Mitch Pileggi doing another series, so he couldn't be written into as many Atlantis episodes? Carter is miltary, but also a scientist so she spanned both areas in Atlantis. Caldwell will complete the change from civilian to military. And then you can have all those "dramatic moments" as Sheppard butts heads with Caldwell over military decisions and McKay rants about how shortsighted the military is at just wanting to blow things up first instead of looking at the bigger picture.

I hope it goes back to civilian leadership, but I don't think it will with the threats to Earth from the Pegasus galaxy.

Hmm, although it could be Woolsey. The IOA might not like the U.S. in charge of operations in Atlantis since the U.S. already has the SGC. He's at least familiar with Atlantis operations.

Ha! I don't know what to think now. Oh, well, the news will be here soon enough. They're going to start filming season soon. When is that, after Valentine's Day?

I'd like to see civilian leadership too. Woolsey, ack, no. The man can't command, not really. He has this bad tendency to fold under intense pressue.

I hope it's Mitchell :) he's relaxed enough to side with Sheppard, but he can handle SG-1 so he can handle Rodney too ;)

MS will be guess-starring in SGA, maybe 4-5 episodes, at least that what he said in Burbank, but that was last year, the TPBs might change their mind again (what's left of it)

I think it would be a real surprise if RDA takes the role, he said he wants to work again (we can only hope) but the role of Atlantis head is not that much screen times, it is a possiblity (a small one).

Date: 2008-02-03 04:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] parislove27.livejournal.com
Nah, Mitchell has to lead SG-1, he's good for that. I love him though! :)

If RDA takes the role, I think I would have a shock attack and die! That would be great and awkward at the same time. It would be interesting how he and Sheppard would get along! ;)

Jack & Sheppard would get along fine... they're both not conventional leaders... Jack is more laid back than anyone. I think Atlantis would flourish :)

From: [identity profile] parislove27.livejournal.com
It sure would! :) Jack and Sheppard would be a perfect match, but I don't think that would happen. They'd have to get some conflict in there. They're too similar! And I don't think they're going to make the expedition's top leaders both military. That would make it all militarized. I might have to shut my mouth soon because somebody will bring up the comment "But Carter was military!" ;)

Not as big-name as the other possibilities we've been discussing, but is Colonel Reynolds from SG-1 still alive/available? I really liked him in Zero Hour, and he's been in a few other SG-1 episodes as well.

Oh, god, Woolsey... I can't even think about that possibility for more than a few seconds at a time. And though I like Caldwell, I wouldn't like him as the resident boss. Same goes for Landry. Hank works well for SG-1 but I can't see him over in the Pegasus galaxy.

I thought it might have been Daniel at first because I seriously think they want to get a civilian back in charge. It's a delicate situation because it brings up the same issues that Sam coming in did--we wouldn't want someone science who would negatively impose on Rodney's command and we wouldn't want someone too military who would usurp John's command.

Tapping

From: (Anonymous)
Tapping had a contract to do I think 10 epsidoes of SGA before SG1 was even cancelled. If it is a fact they used that to due away with Weir well thats a shame. As for me I have no guess for the New CO but please NOT Wollsey (did I spell that right ? )

Re: Tapping

Date: 2008-02-02 10:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com
Tapping had signed for an SG1 season 10 that never occurred, so they optioned her contract to SGA, and got rid of Weir. TPTB already stated in the press that they'd always wanted to bring an SG1 character to SGA, and my feelings (repeat, mine, a guess, etc.) is that they found Weir to be the most expendable, so she went out the window and CArter was slotted in, primarily to draw over SG1 fans who woudln't watch the show before...

Woolsey? If they put him in charge, well, they are doomed, no, DOOMED!

It will be interesting to see who replaces Carter. There are several good choices that you have all mentioned.

I don't think we can blame the TPTB for this change. It sounds like it's Amanda Tappings's decision to leave for professional opportunities. Also, she was a logical choice to fill the position in the first place, since she was a skilled, already-in-the-Stargate-universe actress, under contract.

I'm fairly sure it will be either Caldwell, Mitchell or Daniel. I think it would be interesting to see how Sheppard and Caldwell get along. I also thing Mitchell is a great character and leader. He would fit well in that situation. I also think that because he wasn't on SG-1 for that long people can adjust to him being on SG-1. I'm also hoping it's Daniel but I think if he comes on he'll steal the whole show and they have to rename the show Stargate Daniel. I hope he'll at least be a recurring character of his knowledge of the ancients. Wow, I wrote so much. Who knows maybe it could be Woolsey or even Bates or Colonel Ellis.
