What do you do with an eviscerated body? I mean, really? We called the town and they said, not on public property, it's yours.

Yes, the joys of suburbia. NOT.

Well, first thing morning, family member had to go to E.R., which turned into 12 hours at the E.R.!!!

So, the body  and its bits lay all over the front lawn. Sometime last night, a pack of coyotes attacked a deer on our driveway, just mere feet from the house, chased it about twenty feet ripping off all the hair from the underbelly, then began to disembowel it alive. There was a path of hair, then bits of internal organ, and then a long trail of blood where the coyotes dragged to the edge of the property near the stone wall, and ate out all the guts.

I found it when I let the dog out before the ambulance arrived. I said, why is the dog sniffing a pile of snow in the front yard? Wait, we havent' had snow in weeks, it's all gone (except for the pile in the area down here the road where the sun don't shine, really, the sun never hits that spot). Anyway, my eyes follow fur and blood trail and then I saw the partially eaten carcass. joy. At least it's winter, so the cold will keep down the stench (you don't want to see a four-day dead deer in the summer, nope, nope).

But while in the E.R., was talking with a paramedic who said, oh no, don't bury it, they'll be back tonight for the meat. And yup, after going home, arriving in the dark, I get out of the car and hear the most hideous hyena-ish noises out back. I'm like, "THEY"RE BACK!" so I rush into the house and hope they finish it off. Just went outside to walk tthe dog a few minutes ago and found that the carcass moved at least 30 feet, and more is missing, so... we're leaving it there it's eaten. Fortunately the neighbors can't see the front yard there or else they'd be pitching a fit.

And since I'm so bone-tied from dead bambi bits everywhere, and the ER experience (boring but very stressful) I'll get ARK OF TRUTH tomorrow and hopefully be able to watch it.

Family member is okay, and the coyotes came back and gnoshed some more. Since I have to go to work, I hope they feast some more today!

Coyotes. They do not make those cute howling noises as portrayed on TV. They sound more like hyenas, really. Creepy sound. And I'm in the 'burbs in the northeast.

Yeah, it is, but I guess growing up in a doctor's family and watching lots of CSI, and well, roadkills have always been around here, it's just, well, annoying.

Holy cripes. What a day. :/

I don't usually post comments, but enjoy your newsy and funny blog!

I hope your family member is OK and I am sorry for all the other animal mayhem you endured today.

This means you are done for the year.... Right??!!
;)

Hope the entrails & et cetera are gone soon, and that the family member is doing ok--that's a freaking loooong time for an ER visit! You Defintely deserve some down time.

Oh, this was in the paper the other day (Dead wildlife showing up in people's yards is a fairly common occurrence where I live, unfortunately.) The suggested response was dumping Lime powder (like on CSI) to expedite dessication of the carcass.

Yeah, it's not good when you start recognizing other patients in the ER cuz you've been sitting there so long!

Deer got gnoshed on more last night so the body cavity is emptied outt. I'm hoping they come back tonight to rip off limbs to gnosh elsewhere. And it would be nice if they took the head, too.

What a day for you - my mom had a somewhat similar experience - a coyote was dragging a cat around (yes wildlife and houespets do not mix) and wanted to eat it in the from yard. My mom scared the coyote off, but wanted to dispose (properly) of the cat. She finally was referred to the local fish and game office who told her to let the coyote have the carcass, he'd 'earned it,' otherwise the coyote keep sniffing around the yard trying to find it.

Ah, yes the joys of waiting in the ER...

Yeah, I hear they love housepets, so our cat never goes out, and the dog is leashed now. I'm sorta tired of ERs. Spent too much time there this year with family members.

Sorry to hear about the stressful ER visit - never fun. Hope it's all resolved and okay?

In the surburbs! Coyotes are a growing problem. I understand that they eat deer, but heck, they eat dogs too, so I warned the neighbors about letting their dogs out at night. Yeah, if the deer had been attacked say in the far front or back, that would be okay, it's away from the house, but you step out the garage door and about 10 or so feet away you see where the initial attack took place. Creepy.

Ewwww! The worst we had was a car ran over a sheep on the road outside the house. Farm remember. Well said sheep remained there for a couple of days until my Dad told my brothers to remove it. They hooked it up to the car and tried to drag it away. Would have worked if sheepies front legs hadn't detached from rest of body. It was disgusting. I hope that wasn't too icky a story.

Oh yee gods!! o_O

That's horrible!!

I'm not surprised by the authorities reaction though - some bloke in my home town had a nest of funnel web spiders in his new (imported) car, they said it was on his drive so they wouldn't touch it. Luckily the local zoo was more willing to help and now have a healthy batch of funnel webs in their collection!

Your town should have some kind of dead animal removal. Even here in NYC they have it.

The surburbs are different, alas. Now if this deer had been a buck, yeah, we could have just advertised and said you want the rack, you take the carcass. We'd have had a taker, I'm sure.

Sounds like a scene from Wild Kingdom! Not a pretty sight to behold.

Sorry to hear about having to hang out in the ER. ((hugs))

I received my AOT today so I'm off to watch it now.

Yeah, I keep thinking of Lions of Etosha, some nature special. Blood and guts (some of which are still on the lawn). This would have looked even more horrific if we'd had snow.

I just got my AOT too so getting off briefly to indulge.

Thanks :)

I found AOT to be okay. Need to rewatch it again though but to me, it was just like a TV episode.

And Bambi is still out there on the lawn, although a LOT less. We've decided to see how much will go away as apparently the wildlife is still noshing on the remains.

Where do you live? Course, I should not even ask because we have
these delightful things around here too.....I am convinced my security light is not just turning on and off by itself....
I am almost afraid to look given what I have seen on the side
of the road etc. in the morning and in the back part of
our property.......

Northeast US, suburbs, with a major road only a mile or two away but there is a woodsy park just down the road, so that's no doubt where the deer and coyote spend most time, but they can't help come up and nosh on yew bushes and such.

**nods**
I can relate......I live in a heavily wooded
area near a main two lane road....there are evergreens
and deciduous which just cry for wildlife in
abundance.....
We have had coyotes, cougars and deer as well as
assorted other wildlife.....I hate even looking outside
when the flood light is on in front area of my house
and even less likely to look in the back near the front
door.........
I am certain nobody would come here either if there was
a kill...............

From: [identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com
Well, had this attack been during the summer, I swear I would have dragged the body through shrubs and over the stonewall to the road and said 'look what the coyotes did, and left it on the road.... geez, you'd better pick it up..."
From: [identity profile] black-raven135.livejournal.com
Oh argh!!!
You really think so??
Did I mention black bear too?? it is getting so the
animal control is called more for wild than for domestic
disturbances when it comes to animals......of course they
cannot deal with it, so Fish and Wild Game has to come....
I honestly have no idea what I would do in your circumstances
When I lived in San Diego on top of a mesa, along
a canyon we were in the family room one day and there
were doves outside on the lawn...then there was a flurry
of wings etc. and when it was gone the doves were gone.....
nothing but a few feathers......to this day I have no idea
what came in full throttle...my guess is probably a bald or
one of the red tipped wing eagles....or maybe a hawk.
It was wild to watch.......
From: [identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com
Well, considering how much the dead deer would have smelled. Hmm, yeah, don some heavy duty plastic gloves... of course, it would be a waste of deer, but the neighbors would soon notice an overwhelming stench had it been summer.. Oh yeah, we've had birds blow up on the back yard near the feeder. You see this poof pattern of feathers where the hawk just dove down and BAM! bye bye birdie..

Ah, there was a black bear in the next town over, but someone killed it with a car, so that's it for bears around here :(
