The news didn't surprise me, when I read it (over at GW at http://www.gateworld.net/news/2009/04/richard-dean-anderson-will-be-on-stargate-universe/). To me, it's just basic stuntcasting. They did this with Stargate Atlantis - don't think show can stand on its own merits, perhaps but more likely, they are horrified they'll lose existing viewers so, hence the stuntcasting. The only thing bad about stuff like this is that stuntcasting usually sucks away decent dialogue and time from the regulars on the show, and alas, O'Neill (as they write him) usually has a penchant for embarrassing/lame jokes. Since SGU is supposed to be dramatic, let's hope the writers are smart and lose the lame jokes.

I suspect a decent percentage of fans who said "no way" will tune for RDA, and it wouldn't surprise me one iota if SciFi begins advertising RDA being in the show to keep enticing fans to tune in. They just won't say just *when* he'll be in... I've watched enough TV to know they'll work this slant as much as they can ;)

I expected this ever since they said there would be a SG1 guest star for the pilot.

Actually Michael Shanks is the guest star for the premier. I expect RDA is the surprise mid season guest they've been hinting at. There's stunt casting and then there's desperation. This reeks of desperation, and before they've even tried their fledgling show's little wings all on its on too. LOL

Stuntcasting and desperation, indeed. Every time some new announcement about SGU comes out, I am more and more convinced that this is going to end up being a trainwreck of biblical proportions.

I'm not surprised in the least. His and Daniel's character have been with the franchise since the beginning. It's almost tradition at this point for them to be on the show. It wouldn't be Stargate anything if they weren't there to kick it off.

Heh, considering that they reuse scripts too, no surprise ;) Although I expect they'll get Carter in there too.

it's true, many will now watch...but i planned to watch it anyways(even if i think it will suck-but it's stargate we are talking about^^),with RDA in it or not,and if he is in,ok for me:)

Totally unrelated...was that Rachel Luttrel at the end of ER tonight? I could have sworn one of the EMTs at the end was her.

Huh, so MS and RDA - certainly smacks of trying to get the exsisting SG fans on board. Odd seeing as they made it clear we're no longer their target audience...

Whatever.

I'll still give SGU a go, like i said i would, but honestly, even the inclusion of this pair doesn't make me any more hopeful that i'm going to enjoy it.

I think that they figured out that not even Robert Carlyle would get them the good press and old fans' interest that they need - online polls prove that people are still rather unsure about this series. Yes, TPTB screwed up really bad with the whole "we need a younger audience" and "you will have a new SG series, so shut up" sort of speeches.

I think Carlyle is a great actor, but I also think TPTB realize that he may not be a big enough draw, especially for SG fans who have ditched the franchise. Using a very well known face (RDA) is their way of drawing back the viewers/fans.

Oh yes, have done a quick search of the net and folk have said "Okay, NOW I'll watch." So, network execs are using RDA as bait to draw in the recalcitrant viewers.

Sorry, meant to add, considering the way RDA "phoned in" his last few appearances on SG1 there's no way just adding him to a few eps wil entice me to watch it. I still love the Jack of earlier SG1 but no way will I watch Babygate just cos they've hooked him in for a few eps.

Bitter much? Oh yeah!

Ditto. I love Jack from seasons 1-6, but Jack O'Neill from the later seasons was far more 'miss' than 'hit' on his performances.

Hearing that he'll be guesting on SGU just makes me groan even more about it. It was annoying when they kept shoving SG-1 actors into SGA episodes so seeing them continue that trend with SGU...yep. They suck.

"I suspect a decent percentage of fans who said "no way" will tune for RDA..."

Not surprising and still doesn't interest me. I like RDA, the man is cool, but having him on the show won't persuade me to watch it. I have no decided if I will watch it or not. I guess it all depends on how busy grad school will be and I suspect very busy. LOL

BTW: love the stargate: geezer icon lol I just noticed it

I guess they're trying to take advantage of the fact that the characters of Jack and Daniel are "owned" by the franchise, since they were bought lock, stock and barrel when MGM bought the rights to the original movie. That's why they were the only SG-1 members in the SGA pilot too.

Still not interested. RDA has been playing Jack as a goofball, with the writers apparentally encouraging it. I don't want to see that Jack again.

Not really caring about seeing Daniel again all that much either, even though he was always my fave. The Vala Years soured me on the character and the show in general.

I'm sure it will be a hit in the ratings, at least at first, but there's just been nothing vaguely interesting in the premise or the casting for me.

So, RDA is called in to rally the fans to watch BattleStargate: Cloverfield...

Still not interested.

That was my gut instinct from the brief trailer - it was all about the ship, the angst and the shaky!cam.

Sorry, I just deleted a comment since I was logged in on someone else's account and realized it too late. My comment? Peter Deluise, RDA and John Scalzi? Three reasons for me not to watch. Plus, I'm small minded enough not to get past the ditching of SGA. I'll not be watching. I'm sure others will enjoy the new series.

I'm pretty much on the 'can't be bothered watching it' bandwagon. I love Jack but I can't see how they can use him if SGU was supposed to be cut off from every one. And I'm still disgruntled over their treatment.
