Wish they'd let a Stargate spinoff stand on their feet instead of constantly adding SG1 characters... (I like SG1, but I just figure Jack will there to crack bad jokes once more)

Four veterans of the "Stagate" franchise, Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Gary Jones, will reprise their roles in guest stints.
Anderson plays General O'Neil, the former leader of the elite military team SG-1. Tapping plays Samantha Carter, an astrophysicist and U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel. Shanks plays Dr. Daniel Jackson, Stargate's archeologist and linguist. Jones plays Chief Master Sgt. Walter Harriman, commander technician of the team.
Additionally, "Stargate" alum Christopher McDonald will play Sen. Alan Armstrong, the U.S. senator and head of the International Oversight Committee that governs the Stargate program. He is the father to Chloe Armstrong (Elyse Levesque).
Grammy-nominted Janelle Monae will play herself and will perform with her band two songs from her latest album, "Many Moons" and "Sincerely."
Carlo Rota will play Carl Strom, head of the International Oversight Advisory, the civilian oversight committee that heads up the Atlantis expedition and all funding.

Date: 2009-04-15 04:27 pm (UTC)The singer sounds a bit corny, although shows aimed at the youngsters do it all the time. So I see why they are doing it. It only helps to confirm my fears about SGU.

Date: 2009-04-16 02:36 am (UTC)But it has worked on some people. I've already read posts where others have said they just have to watch SGU now that Shanks, Anderson, and Tapping are going to appear. And I'm sure Jones has fans too.
I think TPTB have realized at long last that bombed an SGA bridge with their fans, and may have also burned bridges with their treatment of SG-1 as well.
I'm still in their target demographic and still not impressed. If I do watch, it'll be for the snark value.
The piccy you use

Date: 2009-04-16 05:35 am (UTC)I recall a comment Flangian made about 'guest' slots but not
permanent fixtures......
I just wish they had spent as much time and effort on SGA as they
did SG1.......
I frankly could never get into the Carter thing. She really annoyed
me........and I really hated, as much as Ronon did, seeing her report on board Atlantis as Weir's replacement.
She may know astrophysics but she is a waste as a commander IMO.

This amuses me as in the very beginning, I remember us being told by JM or BW that neither SGA or SG1 cast would be guests as Universe was to be set too far into the future.
Seems they have changed their minds and now it is set just a little ahead of our time, so they can fit in some SG1 cast. Perhaps Van Con was an eye opener for them on exactly HOW MUCH they upset the fans?!
Part of me is so happy that Joe and the rest of the SGA cast are out of this franchise now (assuming the film is vapour ware) as they have been treated so badly, but there is that little part of me that so misses Shep :(

Date: 2009-04-18 02:18 pm (UTC)That's why Sam nor Teal'c were in the Atlantis pilot -- they'd lose certain rights to those characters if they did. With Sam appearing in this one, I have to wonder if the rights issues around her character changed after being a regular on two shows in the franchise, so that just leaves Teal'c out of the loop, along with the rest of the remaining SGA regulars.
Personally, I'd be pleased if no one from the other shows appeared in this hot mess. I'd rather see them in new stuff.

Date: 2009-04-18 02:22 pm (UTC)Though I do wonder if it's a cross-promotion thing, such as the record company and companies involved in the show being owned by some of the same parent companies.
I've been trying to picture how they're going to work in having a musical guest appear as herself, and do not just one, but two songs. The only thing I can think of is maybe some of the characters go to a concert before shipping out, or maybe she's on a USO tour or something. Or, god help us, someone's watching her concert on a holodeck or something.

Date: 2009-04-18 02:35 pm (UTC)The last several years they've not only been "homaging" other shows, but recycling scripts from their own. So yeah, holodeck or an Ancient device. If only it was one of those Wacky Ancient Devices fandom has so much fun with.
