Well, looks like this tree is gonna be toast. A rather large pileated woodpecker has made short work of it in just a week or two. I don't remember seeing all those HOLES in the tree before! But the tree has lived very long - all tree folk who have seen are surprised it hasn't broken in half yet - probably this year. but the bird is gorgeous, and I'd rather have him peck that tree apart than go after the house!

These videos were shot with a Panasonic Lumix DMC=FZ7 digital camera, with a 12x zoom lens, and obviously, no image stabilization! ;)

Oh no
not Woody Woodpecker again!!!!
**stares**
However, you have to admit they are a beautiful bird.
Woodpeckers systematically destroyed our wood church bell tower
It is not in the church but near the entrance. When they left
the holes then the wasps moved in and built a MASSIVE nest
Needless to say, it is now under renovation.......

well, when this little fella is done, the tree is probably just going to fall apart... too cold for anything to move in right now. Yeah, it's beautiful.

You have beautiful woodpeckers! Ours are quite small and not as colorful.

This is the first pileated woodpecker I've seen live. I've seen other woodpeckers, much smaller. This one is the Godzilla of woodpeckers!

ROFL.......
Every time I see the trailer for The Mummy and the Scarab beetles flood the floor of the
tomb, it sends me into UGHs
and of course think of Sheppard who hates them too.

Awww, but I love pileated woodpeckers! They're huge and pretty! He building a nest? You might have babies, and they're cute. They usually only use a nest for one year, though, and build a new one the next year.

Hmm, not sure. Would be cool if he built a nest, but awful low to ground (head height) and exposed.Nah, think he's just destroying the tree. I sorta hope he comes back so I can catch a video in the snow.

He had to get the last bit of destruction in before the cold & snow. That and he has to eat.

*uses the cat icon to scare the bird*

Yup, and that tree branch is definitely on its way out. If he wants to eat it all, no problem. Just hope he doesn't go after anything in better shape.

aluminum siding.
