Well, this should get fandom stirred up...

Showing off the vast fabric of the Stargate universe, cast members from both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis will make appearances in the second season of SGU.

That’s the word from our friends at SCI FI PI, the Web site for Australia’s SCI FI broadcast network, which was in Vancouver last week for an international press junket on the show’s set.

My opinion? It doesn't surprise me that they're using Stargate SG-1 characters. Daniel Jackson is smarter than most of the folks on Destiny so could always a help. Carter? I think the scientist in her would like to see the Destiny so she'd go... Teal'c? There's absolutely no reason for him to go, and he'd probably need therapy if he ended in Eli's body ;) Jack makes the most sense (everybody reporting back to him). Mitchell? He' s a pilot, so, er, why go?

As for Atlantis... and I see this, quite honestly, as a way to draw back all the Atlantis fans who quit the franchise (if you comment, please refrain from bad language, thx) . Let's see, Sheppard? Pilot, why go? McKay? Been through body swap, would probably rather eat a lemon than do it again. Teyla, no need, Ronon (same scenario as Teal'c) ;). Zelenka? Hmm...

But of course lots of folks could stay Earth-side as nobody is going to lose the dumb stones anytime soon. My guess is the guest star will be like 2-3 minutes max, although they'll promote the heck out of it. Call me cycnical, but I've watched SyFy too long ;)

I didn't say that I want it to fail, did I?

OMG--I'm so glad someone else said this about Jack. I kept looking at this guy and thinking "where's the real Jack?" (Or actually, "Did you EAT the real Jack?") but still. I know nothing about SG-1, so I didn't feel I could really comment on his character but it just rang so odd. Thank you for confirming my impression!

As a diehard SGA fan, I tuned into SGU reluctantly and prepared to be bitter. I have to say that it has grown on me, so long as I don't think of it as related to SGA. It is dark and messy and there isn't a single character on there that I want to follow into fandom. But Young seems very complex to me, so if I continue to ignore the same old casting stereotypes of the women and minority actors, I can actually pretend that this has nothing to do with SGA and is merely TPTB attempt to revisit BSG or DS9 in their whitebread, predictable way.
I really feel that a SGA character will not blend with this show very well, the tone is so different. (And wouldn't they have to address the post-series time if they brought a character over from Earth now?)
Anyway, while the Eleventh Doctor finds his feet, SGU was a fairly engaging show that had nothing to do with 'jumpers, Todd, or, you know, likeable people.

Oh, gosh, yes! I've seen several people say similar things about Jack, but they're mostly people in SG-1 fandom (some of whom gave up on SGU, and the characterization of Jack was a big factor). It honked me off no end. The Jack O'Neill on SGU just isn't the same as the Jack on SG-1 and SGA. I know SGU has a lot of the same writers, but somehow they aren't writing Jack the same way much at all.

My Brilliant Husband suggested at one point that we think about SGU as a fanfic written by the characters in SG-1 and SGA! He imagines Daniel writing Jack while Daniel's in a really snippy mood, and John writing Rush and maybe Eli to annoy Rodney ("can you believe these scientists? They hardly pay any attention to anyone but themselves!"), and then Rodney writes Young and Scott to annoy John ("Look at these military men—no sense whatsoever!")....

Wow, I think your husband is onto something with that idea.

To give your ten ton gorilla one ton bananas. I think you're right. But I also think TPTB wouldn't give every SGA actor/actress a chance to join (hopeful it will NOT be JF). But this change of minds of TPTB is really interesting ...

I gave SGU ten chances and it doesn't hook me - to tell the truth I was thinking of a fanfic to kill the whole whiny gang off. And at that point I gave up and it wouldn't be on my interest list anymore. What me get on the barrikades are SGU-lovers who offent fans of the other shows (SG-1 and Atlantis).
You can enjoy SGU, okay, but don't blame anyone who don't like the show.
To answer the question: No, SGU isn't part of the franchise for me.

Adding my support to the SGU not living up to the Stargate name. And being able to express that view without being pounced upon as a bad fan. I like what I like, no shame in that. And I'm still bitter about the cancellation, also no shame in expressing it.

BattleGateVoyager90210 sucks. I hate it.

There is no real Stargate on TV anymore. No you see, Stargate died with SG1 and Atlantis...they were real science fiction. Stargate Universe? It is nothing more than a space soap with unappealing characters, unappealing plots, pathetic acting, shaky vomit inducing cameras, no actual lighting, crude & distasteful sex, no action, super fake blue aliens, recycled enemies (the Lucian Alliance), overdone mantras like 'we're the wrong people in the wrong place'--damn right they are, and not to mention the Destiny is one boring ship.

exactly, I dont do SGU and having an sga actor on there may make me catch the clips on youtube, but it will not encourage me to watch the show. and if that means im not a true fan then so be it.

*Shrugs*

And YOUR opinion of whether or not I call myself a "fan" matters to me, why???? Sorry to puncture your ego but....that is simply not the case. I consider myself a Stargate fan (who the heck cares what YOU think? not me! =P ) only because I STILL enjoy all 15 seasons of SG1 and SGA on my DVDs (ok I admit I bought all 10 seasons of SG1 -twice! once as each season was released, once as a fancy schmancy set-- so does money = fan? if so I think I have YOU beat! ) and tried(and oh how I tried!) to watch SGU, but the show stinks like a pigfarm. The acting is a joke, the writing is horrible, the lighting just hides the fact they are re-using the older Stargate props & sets, the shakey camera is so pretentious. (and you know the saying..."an ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure"...this show has it in spades!) But the fanboiz and Rabid Fans (yes babe, I am THAT Rac80! *wink, big grin* )still adore it and MUST find a way to denigrate those that have the incredibly good taste to disdain the show!

We'll have to wait and see what context the characters appear in... I'm hoping it's more than 2 minutes...

I do think that. It's a business move, pure and simple. I see the Stargates as a pizza. Different toppings for each show, and some folks like all the toppings, and others, not so much.

I've griped ad naseum about an actual physician, and they finally got one on board briefly.

Yeah, okay, I'm not the only one who goes "hmm, pod Jack?"

Or Zelenka? I suppose it would depend on whose available (well, they all sorta are) but McKay or someone scientific makes more sense than the others.

I don't think Keller could handle being on the Destiny with such a grim bunch, let alone the body-swapping stuff.

I'm watching SGu as well, but it's not my favorite Stargate. I think SGA is although SG1 runs very close, but while SGU is Stargate, it's not Stargate that I love. Too dark, grim, and I'm still waiting for truly likeable character. I mean, I do like some fantasy when I get home. Get enough grim stuff on evening news.

I do like the actors, so am still watching the show, but it's not a show I'm deep into fandom (such as fanfic, etc).

Would be neat if it did. However, since MGM owns the shows, they gotta get their stupid money problems ironed out first. Ah, sigh.

I have no problem in people loving every single Stargate or disliking a bunch of them. but like I said somewhere here, SGu is just a different pizza. Stargate was my wonderful plain cheese pizza, SGA with anchovives (love 'em) and SGu, well, they stuck on meatballs, which i don't like, butI do like pizza, so I'm still trying it out. Best analogy I can think of.
