I got his ashes back last week. I wanted him to lose weight, but this is ridiculous! ;) He's in a little tin. I'm still trying to decide on his final resting place (as in what kind of box). I keep thinking 'cookie jar' since he liked those so much.

And although he's been gone for weeks now, dog fur is still attaching to me. It's everywhere, despite vacuuming. It's in the car. There's still dog 'snobber' on the rear driver's side window, and eh, I'll clean that off in the Spring when it's warm enough to do it. I still think during the day, usually at night, something I must do, which is put the dog out.

I remember when our last dog died over a decade ago, the squirrel always came to the back door. We'd named him Little Buddy as every single morning, without fail, I'd come downstairs and there'd be a THUNK on the door and I'd open the door and the squirrel was clinging to the screen door (yes, she eventually ruined the window). And then I'd open the door, she'd drop and the dog would chase  her. This went on for years. When the dog got toward the end, I was sitting outside with him, with a blanket over him and the squirrel walked right up to him and sniffed him and wanted the dog to chase her. After he died, Little Buddy still came to the door but then realized the dog was gone, and soon, Little Buddy was gone, as the Mafia Squirrels, as I'd named them (they'd gotten 'tarred' on face and feet from neighbor's gunk on trees) moved in. Too much competition.

Rory didnt' have a little buddy, but he always launched out the back door and bark and the squirrels would fly off the bird feeder, and he'd run over and BITE the gutter drain. All the paint is off and now it's nostalgic. And other remnants are... chewed furniture from his puppy days, a hole in basement tile (yes, he chewed through the floor!), dog nose spots on wood floor. I put away his leash and brushes (except one, which the cat likes). I'm tossing his remaining special dog diet food out to the wild critters since it's so cold. Will check to see if they eat it tomorrow.

I'd like another dog, but that will take time and as much as puppies are cute, I don't think I have energy or time (unless I win powerball and don't have to work!) I hope to adopt a dog, a Sheltie or border collie. After watching other dogs over the last week, have realized how much I love Shelties, despite all their fur.

The cat still runs around the house and screams, for him, or maybe for me to feed him NOW. Hard to tell, but he realizes Rory is gone now.

Oh! *wibbles* Losing a pet sucks in ways no words can describe.

It's also never wise to go out and get a pet after another pet has just died until some times has past. For emotional reasons, for time reasons, and I swear it never turns out well. After my cat Fidget died, about two days later I went out and got the first cat I came across. She was all sweet at first but it wasn't long before it was like a demon had possessed her. In all my years of owning cats, I had never met a cat as vicious and unloving as this one. The only time she was nice was when she was in heat. When she vanished, I wasn't entirely heart broken.

A few years later, I got my cat Bug, who is my but and my baby.

And Mitsy, and Roxy. Roxy just jumped onto the table and it made me feel guilty that I didn't mention them. They're my buds, too :D

Both were. I must admit, despite the fur problems (too much!) I wouldn't mind another Sheltie down the road.

Thanks. And, really, you can get in a cat in a harness and it doesn't fall over in a catatonic state??

It's all those little reminders that become less painful and more comforting. Yes, puppies, they're so cute but they are a lot of work. I rescued my pup at around 8 months or maybe a bit less and that was a lot of work but she was the 'one' so what can you do? I like shelties.

I do like the cookie jar idea.

I do plan that if I get another dog, that it will be a rescue.

The dog hair will be with you for a loooong time. I have one of those hairy monsters at home, too lol.

All these little things that used to annoy us are suddenly such treasures, aren't they?

It would be wonderful for another dog to come into your life and be spoiled and loved by you!

On another note, wow this is eery, just when I read your entry I got a text from my hubby, telling me my grandmother's dog "Schatzi" past away last Sunday.

We are of course going to see her Saturday for Christmas and the present we had planned for her was a picture of her little one from quite a few years ago win a nice frame and was all before we even knew.

Losing a pet is always hard, and the constant reminders are always there.

I know when I get my westies hair cut, the clouds of white fluff deny even the dyson...and as for my new black rug!

As you already know, it will get eventually easier though, but I agree with you about not jumping into getting another dog. They are wonderful loyal pets, but take a lot of work and time, and life being what it is, you are really being responsible considering it carefully before going down that route again...at least for now!

Hope you have a good Christmas and that the New Year brings you everything you wish yourself

Neat idea to put his ashes in a cookie jar. We didn't get Snitch's ashes. I do have a paw print they made with her. She hated her paws touched so they had to wait until after we said good bye to her. The clay was drying by then so the print is fairly light. I tear up whenever I see it because that is so "her" It even has a piece of her fur stuck in it.

They are with us forever in our hearts.

I got a pawprint thing back. I hadn't even asked for it but they did, which I'm quite happy with. We have fur, whiskers, and lots of photos and some videos to remember him by.

I am. Just realized with blizzard coming, I do not have to dig a ton of paths for him to wander through the back yard with. That will be strange not to have to do that.

Thanks. While I was digging through snow, I kept thinking how much the dog would have loved it. I've had to readjust my thinking that no, I will no longer be stepping on dog poo in those snow tunnels I dig ;)
