Everybody is doing such cool icons and banners and such and I want to do it, so, what's the best package to get? Right now I have windows 2000 but will probably  need something that will be usable on (ack) Windows Vista...

Advice??

Personally, I prefer PSP...however, you will probably find more resources for PS on the web. Each have their quirks...and sometimes using both in combination can work well...

Just be aware, the latest of PS requires at least a gig of RAM. And avoid installing the suite where possible. The amount of crap it installs tat you will never use is shocking.

If you are going for PSP, get PSP-X...

I have and use Photoshop CS2 at work, but at home I use Photoshop Elements, which is great for things like icons and the like. It uses layers, masking and filters, and I can also use my wacom with the program as well. I used it to create my elves :o)

As I use a Mac I haven't had much used PSP in a few years, but if you do go the Photoshop route, get Elements. I have Photoshop CS3 and love it, but if all you are going to do with it is make icons or retouch snapshots then Elements is more then enough. Elements would be far cheaper and would be less demanding on your system.

You could try downloading both softwares. I know that you can get a full trail version of Adobe software for thirty days... Not sure about PSP, but I think given that Adobe does it, they would have do it as well.

I have both Paint Shop Pro (PSP) and Photoshop, and I usually use Photoshop.

You can download a 30 day trial for photoshop from their site (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/index.html).

I use Photoshop, but Paintshop Pro also works well, especially if you don't want to pay the amount of money you need for Photoshop. Although I'm not sure what the full version of Paintship costs to tell the truth.

There is also this one graphics program I hear alot of that apparently is free called "GIMP" I believe.

I know that I don't plan to spend more than $100 or so, so the full sized Photoshop is definitely out of the question. I think Paintshop full version is maybe $149, which is doable.

GIMP? Hmm, must see about that.
